SLAVONIJA, BARANJA & ILOK

What to expect

We are taking you to Slavonia and Baranja, a breathtaking plain, made of magical natural beauties and landscapes, famous for its irresistible gastronomic experiences, warm Slavonian soul and charm of Baranja.

We start our Slavonian adventure in the Nature Park, Kopački rit, home to hundreds of biological species and birds, from where the morning chirping of birds will take us to Osijek. A city placed in between wheat fields and the river Drava, surrounded by natural beauty, not too big nor too small, just the right size!

On the main town square there is the concathedral of St. Peter and Paul as well as the famous Fortress. The two are connected by an avenue, which represents the longest stretch of city palaces in Southeast Europe, built in the late 19th and early 20th century, whose facades are decorated with frescoes of Slavonian fields and rivers.

We are leaving Osijek behind and set off for Kneževi vinogradi, through whose landscapes stretches a wine road, nearly 8 km long.

Afterwards we will make a stop in Suza, a picturesque village, from which beauty your eyes could tear up. We continue our trip towards the Baranja wine pearl, the Danube village of Zmajevac. In its cellars we will discover the secrets of the taste of white and black magic: Graševina, Traminer, Chardonnay, Merlot…

It’s hardly possible to pass through Slavonia and Baranja without tasting the rich delicacies of Slavonian estates. Apart from the abundance of the plains, the heritage of Slavic, Hungarian, Germanic and Ottoman cuisine is woven into gastronomy of Slavonia and Baranja. As a result of that mixture, Slavonia became very famous for its dishes, such as paprikash, shepherd's stew, various fish delicacies (fish paprikash, carp on forks) and many others.

A special place is occupied by kulen, sausages, greaves and bacon. It’s hard to describe the pleasure of enjoying Slavonian-Baranja delicacies in the authentic ambience of local rural households. We could try and describe it as "synesthesia" – the taste of kulen on the palate, the smell of a shepherd’s stew in the nose, the roar of a horse in the ear, the beauty of a blossoming yard in front of the eyes, and hands full of ... just a little bit more kulen, cheese, wine and fresh salads! In such an environment, for sure, Beckett would greet Godot, and even Proust would not need seven volumes to find the lost time. Moreover, in one of our most picturesque villages, Baranja's Karanac, it would already be waiting for him - at a full table, in the Street of Forgotten Time.

Saturday begins with a visit to the city of heroes - Vukovar, a symbol of defense and suffering of Croatia in the Homeland War, from where we continue our journey to Ilok and Ilok cellars, built in the 15th century, at the height of medieval, at the time royal Ilok. The best Ilok wines are being kept here, and they represent one of the sources of wealth of the city. Perhaps the most glorious moment in the history of Ilok wines took place on June 2 in 1953, when the most famous Ilok wine, Traminer, was used for a toast in London, at the enthronement of Elizabeth II!

Somewhere on the mystical border of the plain and the sky, Đakovo and the National Lipizzan Stud Farm are located. Over there, in a picturesque landscape, Lipizzaner horses gallop, and once you touch them, it feels like you just touched the history. An unavoidable part of Đakovo processions is their passage in front of the Cathedral of St. Peter, one of the most famous sacral buildings in Croatia - in the crypt of which is the tomb of one of the greatest Croats of the 19th century - Bishop Josip Juraj Strossmayer.

From Đakovo we continue on the path of Stupnički dvori, through a landscape that puts on a new outfit in every season. In spring, the lowlands are colored with yellow rapeseed flowers, while in summer and early autumn swarms of bees and bumblebees play in the sunflower fields. Golden wheat fields are a motif without which one cannot leave this part of Croatia.
