Split to Plitvice Lakes Tour
12 hours (approx.)
Up to 12 hours in advance
Your English speaking guide will take care of you during your tour from Split to Plitvice Lakes and make sure you do not miss any of the best highlights on the way! After a three hour long drive you arrive to the Plitvice National Park, a world’s natural heritage site.
The National Park Plitvice Lakes is one of the greatest natural wonders of Europe. It was proclaimed the first national park in Croatia in 1949. The Plitvice Lakes were internationally recognised in 1979 with their inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Let us take you on a journey through history and unique nature. While on the road you will have the opportunity to see famous Croatian landscapes and our guide will tell you some interesting facts about Croatian customs and cultural heritage. When you reach the destination, the guide will take you to buy the tickets. An electric train and a boat ride that take you around the park are included in the ticket price. After entering the park, you will be provided with important information and a map. There are two entrances to the National Park (Upper and Lower Lakes). These are marked 1 and 2 on the panoramic map. Large notice boards at each entrance provide visitors with basic information concerning walking trails through the Park and the locations of viewpoints, car parks, hotels, post office, bus stops, first-aid posts etc. The trails are also marked on the tickets bought at the entrance. From then on, you will have 4 hours of free time to explore sixteen beautiful lakes of crystal blue-green water and hypnotic cascades. You have seven different routes to tour the lakes. If you decide on going hiking you can choose between four hiking trails.
The Plitvice Lakes are a whole year sensation, especially when covered in snow during winter periods. They truly resemble a winter wonderland. You can relax in the shade or explore the results of the process called sedimentation of the calcium carbonate and the work of special kinds of algae and moss. Tufa or travertine has continuously been deposited to form the natural dams that separate the lakes. Since the process is still going on today, just as it has always been, new travertine barriers, curtains, stalactites, channels and cascades are being built and the existing ones are changing, giving the water sparkling beauty and enhancing the allure of the trees and stones which fall into the lakes. The water keeps breaking through the travertine barriers at different places, so that the entire process of formation of lakes and dams is alive and very dynamic. This is a unique and interesting natural phenomenon. Nature continues to impress in undisturbed ecological conditions. Besides the lakes, there are some interesting caves in which the remains of prehistoric settlements have been found. In the end, we suggest using the opportunity to taste typical local dishes from this area in a local tavern (optional).
The meeting before returning to Split is at a pre-arranged location. The ride back takes just a bit longer than 3 hours. The expected time of return is at 8 pm.
