Let our experienced official tour guide take you back in time of Illyrian tribes, Romans, Uskoks from Klis and the first Christians. We will start when and where you want.
First we will go to the Klis fortress. Built at a great strategic location that allows military and commercial control over the whole area of Salona and Split. Its importance was often referred to as the key to Dalmatia and the medieval Croatian kingdom. The first people to populate the area were the Dalmatians, one of the Illyrian tribes. They inhabited the area from the river Krka to Neretva, and this area along the river Jadro. The greatest significance of Klis for Croatian history was reflected in the 15th century. It was situated at the crossroads of three empires – the Venetian Republic, the Habsburg Monarchy and the Ottoman Empire. Klis was the home of the Uskoks and their leader Petar Kružić, who defended the fortress with his men for more than twenty years against the powerful Ottoman army. Nevertheless, with very poor help from the Habsburg ruler, Klis could not defend itself forever, and in 1537 it fell into Turkish hands. For the next 111 years, Klis was in the hands of the Ottomans.
Whenever you are ready, we will go further to Salona. There you can find the remains of the ancient town of Salona. It was built in the 4th century B.C. as a port for the Illyrian Delmati tribe, where Greeks and Romans also lived. In year 48 B.C., Julius Caesar proclaimed Salona as the centre of the Roman province of Dalmatia. The town centre had a trapezoidal form, was enclosed by city walls and was fortified by towers. A complex of basilicas, and a monumental cathedral with a baptistry were within the walls . The thermae were built later and their peristyle is recognizable as a place with baths, saunas and dressing rooms. At the southern part, there are remains of the forum, the temple and the theatre from the 1st century.
The charming little town of Trogir, located just a few miles from Split, it is a real treat and must-see. it is one of the most beautiful places in Croatia with an immense historical, cultural, artistic and architectural value. It was founded in the third century B.C. by Greek colonists. It is known for its architectural mixture of renaissance, baroque and romanesque styles. Hence the nickname ‘’the Stone Beauty’’. UNESCO protected medieval city centre : Trogir - the goat town, Kairos - the Greek god of the happy moment , Radovan portal , St. Lawrence Cathedral, Forts of Trogir - Kamerlengo and St. Marko, City loggia and Small loggia , The City Hall - the Duke's Palace , Range of old wells , First pharmacy in Europe, Trogir palaces in the city centre.
There you will have 2 hours of free time that you can spend in many different ways.
