Blue cave & Hvar tour

Blue cave & Hvar tour

One of the most popular boat excursions from Split and general in whole Dalmatia is called Blue Cave & Hvar tour. The reason lies within the fact it offers a lot for reasonable amount of money. It also guarantees amazing day on Adriatic, the one you will remember for good.

The Blue Grotto or Blue Cave (Croatian: Modra špilja), is a water-logged sea cave located in a small bay called Balun (Ball in the local dialect), on the east side of the island of Biševo and about 4.5 nautical miles (8.3 km) from Komiža, in the Croatian Adriatic. It is situated in the central Dalmatian archipelago, 5 km south-west of the island of Vis. The grotto is one of the best known natural beauty spots on the Adriatic and a popular show cave because of the glowing blue light that appears at certain times of day.

First described and painted by Baron Eugen von Ransonet, the cave was originally accessible only by diving as it had one natural entrance below the sea level. Based on his suggestion, an artificial entrance large enough for small boats was built in 1884.

The natural entrance to the cave, located on its southern side, is said to resemble a vault on the ceiling of a grotto. It is through this submarine-like opening on the ceiling of the cave that sunlight gets in and creates an iridescent blue glowing effect all around the cave. As well, a stone bar, connecting two walls of the cave, is clearly visible just below the waterline, both in above-water photographs and in underwater photos.

Depending on the season, the ideal moment to visit the cave is between 11 AM and 12 noon. At this time of day the sunlight reflects through the water coming from the white floor of the cave and bathes the grotto in aquamarine light, while objects in the water appear to be silver. The Blue Grotto (Italian: Grotta Azzurra) on the island of Capri in Italy is also famous for this type of phenomenon.

The cave was formed by the wave action of the sea, as sea water eroded the limestone rock of which the whole island of Biševo is composed. The cave itself is 24 meters long, 10–12 meters deep and up to 15 meters high, while the entrance to it measures 1.5 meters high and 2.5 meters wide.

The cave receives more than 10,000 tourist visits every year, and tourist boats often include a visit to another similar cave on the island, the Zelena špilja (English: The Green Grotto), which is bigger in size and appears to be of an emerald-green tone due to a similar effect.

Tour start from Split at 07:30 in the morning with gathering of the group on designated location.

Blue Cave
First thing on our tour to be visited is Blue Cave located on marvellous island of Biševo, on the south-west side of Vis island. The entrance ticket is included in the price, so the only thing for you and the rest of the group is to wait until designated entrance time.

Bear Cave, Stiniva Beach and Budikovac island
After Blue Cave sightseeing we continue our cruise along the south east side of Vis island to visit Bear Cave, Stiniva Beach and stop on Budikovac island. Stiniva beach is a place to stop and take a dip because it was voted on numerous locations as one of most interesting and beautiful beaches in Europe.

On the other side, Budikovac island is one of many in Vis aquatorium, inhabited but charming with its beach bar and splendid swimming location. If you do not prefer to swim, you can always choose to have a drink in local beach bar.

Pakleni islands
After Budikovac our boat excursion heads for Hvar and Pakleni islands. Pakleni islands is actually a set of islands located in front of Hvar town, famous for its beauty and amazign gastro offer. There you can find some of the best sea food restaurants like Laganini and Toto’s or popular beach clubs like Carpe Diem Beach Club in Stipanska bay. And yes, we just can not go over it: the actual correct name of this set of islands is PAKLENI islands. It was named after PAKLINA, a black resin characteristic for the type of pines growing on the islands.

Hvar town
If you prefer just to enjoy Pakleni islands and not spend time in restaurants – don’t worry. You will have enough time to have a meal in Hvar. Also, our skipper will pay attention that you have enough free time both for sightseeing and having a lunch/dinner in Hvar town. When it comes to sightseeing, we can only mention here few locations not to miss: Fortress on top of the hill above Hvar, main square, St. Stephen’s cathedral,…

After Hvar, our excursion is coming to an end. But, as they say in TV commercials: THAT IS NOT ALL! For the end, you will enjoy in one of the nicest sunsets on Mediterranean during our cruise bak to Split. You can say, it is cherry on top of wonderful day!
